UHN STEM Talks: Brain Health and Balance

December 16, 2025

In this event, I learned about concussions, which is a mild brain injury that most people recover from. I also learned that people who play contact sports, like American football, are much more likely to develop a concussion. Symptoms could be: headaches, drowsiness, slurred speech, confusion, amnesia, and dizziness. To protect yourself from these injuries, you could make sure that you wear protective gear that fits properly (e.g. bicycle helmet, mouthguard, padding) and your seatbelt, and be particularly careful while walking up or down stairs.

I think that this workshop helps me understand what could influence or increase the risk of certain injuries. This could also help me learn what sports or habits have a higher chance of concussions and allow me to stay safe and healthy.
