2026 Monthly Clean, Green Up Day – North York

August 1, 2026

Today, the York Region Caring Lions Club and the A2ZLiteracy Youth Reading & Writing Club came together to host our monthly community cleanup at North York Cummer Park Community Centre.

Originally planned for July, the event was postponed due to weather. We are grateful to every volunteer for their patience and for returning with the same enthusiasm and kindness. It was wonderful to gather once again and make a positive difference in our community.

We began the morning by introducing the missions of our two non-profit organizations, followed by a relaxed icebreaker. Families participated together—parents accompanied their children, cousins joined as a team, friends came together, and some volunteers came on their own. Although many arrived as strangers, everyone shared the same desire to give back to the community.

This time, we organized volunteers into small groups. Beyond cleaning the park, we hoped the children would have the opportunity to collaborate, get to know one another, and experience the joy of teamwork while serving the community.

On the beautiful summer morning, the park looked clean at first glance. But as we looked more closely, we discovered small pieces of litter hidden among the grass. Wearing gloves and carrying litter pickers, our volunteers carefully collected every piece of paper, plastic, and debris they could find. Each time someone bent down to pick up a piece of litter, they added a small act of kindness to the morning.

After the cleanup, we invited every volunteer to introduce themselves to someone they had not met before and spend a few minutes sharing their stories. Some happily discovered they came from the same hometown. Others found common interests or simply enjoyed exchanging stories about their lives. In just a short time, strangers became new friends, and meaningful connections began to grow.

One of the most heartwarming moments came after the event, when a parent sent us a message saying that their child had truly enjoyed the experience and had even “fallen in love with volunteering.”

Reading those words brought smiles to all of us.

We believe that volunteering is about much more than completing community service hours. It is an opportunity for young people to develop compassion, build friendships, strengthen their sense of responsibility, and discover the joy of contributing to something bigger than themselves.

We hope every act of service helps children experience kindness, find purpose, and grow into caring members of their communities. These experiences may one day become some of the most valuable memories and life lessons they carry with them.

Thank you to every volunteer and every parent for making this event possible. Together, we are creating not only a cleaner community, but also a more connected and compassionate one.

May caring for the environment become a habit, and volunteering become a source of joy. May every act of kindness brighten both our own lives and the lives of others.
